Pressure Gauge: What are they, how do they work, and what do they measure?

A **pressure gauge** is an instrument that displays the pressure of a gas or liquid in your system directly. Whether it’s compressed air, mains water, or steam, the right pressure gauge provides reliable readings to help you keep your process under control.

What Is a Pressure Gauge?

A pressure gauge compares the system pressure with a reference pressure (usually atmospheric pressure or vacuum). In analog models like Bourdon tube gauges, a curved tube flexes under pressure and moves a pointer. Digital pressure gauges convert the pressure via sensors (piezoresistive or capacitive) into a numeric display.

We supply pressure gauges for a wide range of applications, such as air pressure gauges for pneumatic systems and water pressure gauges for water networks.

How Does a Pressure Gauge Work?

In an analog pressure gauge (EN 837-1), the process pressure causes the Bourdon tube to flex; through a gear and sector mechanism, this motion is transferred to the pointer. A digital pressure gauge uses a pressure transducer that converts diaphragm deflection into an electrical signal, which is processed by a microprocessor and shown on a display.

In environments subject to shock or vibration, we recommend liquid-filled gauges (filled with silicone oil or glycerin) to dampen fluctuations.

Pressure Gauge

Pressure Gauge

A pressure gauge is a measuring instrument that visually displays the pressure of a gas or liquid. Pressure gauges are essential in installations where reliable pressure measurement is crucial, such as compressed air, hydraulics, vacuum, or steam applications. At Ebora, you will find a wide range of analog and digital pressure gauges for various applications in industry and technology.

What is a pressure gauge?

A pressure gauge is a device that measures the current system pressure relative to a reference value, such as atmospheric pressure or vacuum. The most commonly used version is the Bourdon pressure gauge, where a curved tube straightens under increasing pressure. This mechanical movement is transmitted via a gear mechanism to a pointer on the dial.

In addition to analog pressure gauges, Ebora also offers digital pressure gauges that electronically detect and display pressure on a digital screen. This type of pressure gauge is often used for higher accuracy or in environments with heavy mechanical stress.

What does a pressure gauge do?

The pressure gauge shows whether a system is operating within safe pressure limits. It ensures operational safety, detects malfunctions, leaks, or overpressure, and assists with system calibration and tuning. At Ebora, we also offer pressure gauges with appendages such as siphons and snubbers to absorb vibrations or pressure spikes.

How does a pressure gauge work?

In a Bourdon pressure gauge, a hollow, curved tube bends under internal pressure. This movement is mechanically linked to a pointer that indicates pressure on a scale in bar, psi, or kPa. Digital variants use sensors like piezoresistive or capacitive elements and display the pressure electronically.

Different types of pressure gauges

Ebora supplies:

  • Relative pressure gauges – measure against atmospheric pressure.
  • Differential pressure gauges – measure the difference between two points.
  • Absolute pressure gauges – measure against vacuum (0 bar).
  • Digital pressure gauges – for high accuracy and readability.
  • Explosion-proof pressure gauges – compliant with ATEX/IECEx.
  • Custom logo pressure gauges.

What to consider when selecting a pressure gauge?

When selecting a suitable pressure gauge, consider the pressure range, accuracy, process connection, case material, and connection orientation (back, bottom, side). The dial size (commonly Ø63, Ø100, or Ø160 mm) is chosen based on reading distance and space constraints.

For systems with vibrations or pressure fluctuations, we recommend a filled pressure gauge. The filling (e.g., glycerin or silicone oil) dampens vibrations and extends the mechanism's lifespan. Ebora also supplies pressure gauges with diaphragm seals for hygienic or aggressive environments.

Calibration and service

In addition to supply, Ebora offers calibration, repair, and overhaul of pressure gauges. We also deliver pressure gauges with certificates in accordance with EN 837 or ASME B40.100, and can provide custom branding on request.

Ebora offers:

  • Pressure gauges for air pressure and compressed air
  • Hydraulic pressure gauges for high pressure
  • Pressure gauges for gas, water, and vacuum pressure
  • Digital pressure gauges powered by mains or battery
