Vortex Insertion Flow Meter VIM20
The VIM20 vortex insertion flow meter uses three primary detection elements to measure the mass flow of steam, liquids, and gases:
- Vortex velocity sensor
- RTD temperature sensor
- Solid-state pressure transducer
Principle of Operation:
Vortex flow meters measure the flow of liquid, gas, and steam by detecting the frequency at which vortices are alternately shed from a bluff body. According to physical laws, the frequency at which the vortices are alternately shed is directly proportional to the flow rate. Vortex insertion flow meters measure the flow rate by measuring the local velocity at a strategic position in the pipeline.
The VIM20 detects the frequency at which vortices are alternatively shed from the bluff body (positioned in the sensor head). The VIM20 calculates the average velocity in the pipeline based on the local velocity and other parameters such as fluid type, pipe size, and Reynolds number. From this, the volumetric flow rate is calculated.
VIM20 Range and Benefits:
The VIM20-V provides a direct display of the volumetric flow rate. This is the most cost-effective solution for flow measurement of liquids in various applications ranging from general water flow to hydrocarbon fuel flow measurement.
The VIM20-VT includes a precision 1000-ohm platinum RTD temperature sensor, used for calculation and displaying compensated mass flow.
The VIM20-VTP provides the functionality of a flow computer in a compact device. This multivariable device includes temperature and pressure sensors for an immediate display of compensated mass flow of gases, liquids, and steam. This device not only includes outputs for totalized mass and alarm settings, but the adjustable electronics provide up to three analog 4-20 mA outputs for five process measurements, including volumetric flow rate, mass flow rate, pressure, temperature, and density.
The VIM20-EM version for energy measurements delivers real-time calculations of the energy consumption of a production unit or process. The flow meter can be programmed to measure steam, hot water, or chilled water. The VIM20-VTP-EM flow meter monitors one side of the process (flow or return) and uses the input from a second, separate temperature sensor on the other side of the process to measure changes in energy. The energy unit is adjustable in BTU, Joules, calories, Watt-hours, Megawatt-hours, and Horsepower-hours. The local electronics or remote electronics display two temperatures, delta T, mass total, and energy total.
